Boulder Image Consultant Marian Rothschild, AICI FLC, reports that “the” color for spring this year is green. It’s not just this consultant’s opinion, Emerald Green is actually the Pantone color of the year. They make the calls. They set the trends in color every year. Somebody’s got to do it, I suppose. Can you imagine being on the color committee? What would you wear to meetings?

Colors don’t need to match any more, so go ahead and mix two different greens together, or my favorite combo; green & blue… green & pink… green & yellow…you get it.

Great looks this spring for women include nude colored heals and sandals and brightly colored tops that pop and sizzle. You can incorporate these trends into your professional attire for the office as well as more casual looks for weekends and also more formal dresses for evenings.

Multiple strands of the new larger sized fashion pearls give a totally fashion forward statement. These babies add a Wow to any outfit.

An easy way to update what you already have is to mix two prints together. This is huge right now. Here’s the rule; you can mix two prints together if, and only if, there is at least one color the same in the two prints, and if one print is more bold and one is more subtle. This black and white outfit is a perfect example.

Men also; color is the main event and gets top billing this spring. Get out of the winter blues by wearing a touch of red, green and blue together. Balance the colors on top with some fitted cargos or jeans, rolled up sleeves and bright sneakers for an updated take on classics. Also, pop that collar and don’t be afraid to add accessories for a put-together rugged look.

Coral or peach are gorgeous on anyone, but especially when paired with brown. It’s not pink, coral is half way between pink and orange and this lighter version is just toned down a touch. Soft but masculine; that’s what girls like.

Below is another great example of mixing the color coral into outfits. Tiger Woods wears this color! It’s a terrific way to add pop and sizzle to your spring look.

In almost every industry, guys and ladies, young and mature are dressing down for work these days, simply feeling the need for comfort above all else. You want to fit in, but you get the feeling that worn-out jeans, wrinkled tee shirt and muddy hiking boots are not really furthering your branding statement of up-and-coming industry expert. You’re baffled about what to wear to work.

As a certified personal image consultant I advise successful men and women on what to wear for work and weekends to resolve the confusion.

Studies have shown that upgrading your image can increase productivity, confidence, social connections, and even income.

You’ve put loads of time, money, and effort into your education and career. When you meet with clients, customers and co-workers, you want to send the message that you rock! Everything about you rocks; you can do the absolute best job and get it done better than they ever hoped.

You can have fifteen PhD’s, but if your image is scruffy, that’s the first thing they see.

Here are some ways to stand out in a really great way and say bye bye to boring business casual.

Men; a dress shirt, trousers, belt, leather shoes and quality accessories is a clean look that says you’ve arrived. Denim jeans are acceptable only if they look fairly new, fit very well, are dark blue, clean and wrinkle-free. A cardigan sweater, pull-over sweater, tie, and sport jacket are all fantastic add-ons for a sharp, smart, sizzling image.

Ladies; trouser-style slacks, (even dark trouser denims) or pencil skirt with a silk (or silk-looking) blouse, jacket or cardigan sweater, hose or bare legs, quality accessories, and classic 3″ pumps is a sure-fire, bullet-proof, cool and confident look that’s fantastic for any work situation.

Wear colors that are flattering to your skin tone and eye color. If you’ve got blue or green eyes, wear that color top, or a scarf, something up by your face. Black is the most saturated color so it’s the heaviest, that’s why we wear it to funerals. It’s not inviting nor approachable. Grey is drab and dull. Brown is earthy, green is grounding, plum is creative, blue is calming, beige and off-white are inviting, pink is sweet, orange is fun, and yellow is lively. Choose a bit of pizazz.

Fit is fundamental, it’s essential. Your clothes have to fit you really well, otherwise you look like you’re wearing hand-me-downs. Hems on trousers should be 3/4″ from the floor no matter what shoes you’re wearing. Hems on jacket and coat sleeves should be 1/2″ below your wrist, no longer. Ladies, skirt and dress hems should be right around your knee area; no shorter than 2″ higher than the top of your knee, for credibility. All clothes should skim the body, not cling nor sag. If they don’t fit, take them to a tailor for alterations. It’s worth it.

Always have a jacket on hand, guys and ladies. Nothing says “I’m here for business” like a well-fitting jacket. It should have strong shoulder seems, light shoulder pads, and a collar. For added punch, wear a light colored shirt or blouse (in a flattering color for you) under a medium-shade, or darker jacket.

Leather, hard-soled shoes are the best choice for a polished look for both ladies and men. Guys; lace-ups or slip-ons are fine as long as they are in good shape and clean. Ladies; a 2 1/2″ – 3 1/2″ heal looks terrific with either skirts or slacks. If you absolutely have to wear flats, at least make them a classic ballerina style with either pointed or rounded toe, or something cool. No Mary Jane straps for anyone over the age of eight. All shoes must have a back or back strap, be polished, and heals in good shape.

All clothing must be clean, odor-free, and wrinkle-free. Even jeans; no wrinkles or stretched out knees. Clothes don’t need to be new, but they need to look new.

Top off your terrific look with a current hairstyle that compliments your face shape and works with your hair’s texture. If you’re not sure, ask someone you trust for a recommendation to a great hair stylist. Even if you only go to that stylist once because of expense, ask them questions about products and ways to style your hair for a current look that’s hot.

Ladies, if you want to look put-together you have to have a polished day makeup face. I’m not talking Kim Kardashian on the cover of Trash magazine. I’m talking foundation and concealer, shadow or liner and mascara, and a pretty accent color on your cheeks and lips. This should take you no less than six minutes and no more than twelve minutes to apply. If you’re not sure what shades to wear or how to apply cosmetics, get some instruction in a makeup lesson. It’s worth it. You’ll know what and how to wear makeup for a beautiful face whenever you want.

Last but not least, (and at the risk of sounding like your mother); posture. It’s important. It sends a message. If you slouch or lean, or roll your shoulders forward it looks like you’re apathetic — like you don’t care or you’re not sure. If you sit and stand up straight, with your shoulders relaxed you look confident, strong, ready and able.

If you don’t believe that your personal appearance makes a difference, try these recommendations. See how you feel. And see how other people treat you, speak to you, behave toward you. Then report back to me. Tell me how it goes.

If you’d like individual help with your wardrobe, shopping, and putting together your sizzling style for work or weekends, call or email me. I’m good. I’ll make you look good. Then you’ll know how to recreate the look every day. You’re poised for success. Rock on.

What can absolutely make an outfit? Accessories. What is one of the seven components of a put-together look? Accessories. What can give pop, zing, and sizzle to an otherwise rather dull, ordinary get-up? Yep, you guessed it: accessories.

Yet, in my experience seeing women during speaking engagements, networking events, private consultations, and in my travels to and from both coasts and internationally, what’s missing from most women’s outfits is accessories. We have them, but we don’t wear them. When questioning my clients as to why they don’t wear colorful fashion jewelry, they tell me they’re not quite sure how.

And yet when I layer three gold necklaces together, hanging at ascending lengths, and drape them around the neck of that same client, she looks in the mirror and beams, “Wow, I love that!” I’ve heard it a hundred times.

I’ve compiled some recommendations on how to use fashion jewelry to complete your outfit:

Use colorful necklaces, bracelets, and earrings to add a pop of color, focus, flavor, and accent.

Wear metal necklaces, fine jewelry, or pearls to lend sophistication and elegance to any outfit.

Accessories are an extension of your personality and express your personal style. We all have many different aspects of our personalities and want to dress in a variety of styles for different events. Work, dates, and dressy fundraisers all require different styles and manner of dress. Therefore, your accessories should be in a variety of styles, as well.

Earrings, necklaces, and bracelets do not need to match, but they do need to relate to one another. For example, if your necklace is made of wooden beads, your earrings and bracelet do not need to match exactly, but they do need to have some bits of wooden beads in them.

When wearing either yellow gold or silver, stick to one or the other, primarily for all of your accessories. For example, if your necklace and earrings are yellow gold, do not wear a belt with a big silver buckle.

For job interviews and a business-appropriate look, eight accessories is enough. For example:
1. Necklace
2. Earrings
3. Bracelet
4. Watch
5. Scarf
6. Belt
7. Rings
8. Bag

This is a trick that I heard Marilyn Monroe would do. After she was completely dressed and had on all of her accessories, she’d take a quick look in the mirror. If any one piece of jewelry stood out, she’d take it off because that meant it was too much.

Celebrity stylist Tim Gunn of “Project Runway,” on wearing bright, bold accessories, said, “It’s fun! It’s fresh!”

You’ll stand out in a good way when you wear accessories that compliment, embellish, and pull together the rest of what you’re wearing into an entire outfit.

Guys, this message is for you!

Let’s be honest; all men want to make more love and money.

A study out of the University of Texas revealed that men will make an average of $230,000.00 more in their lifetime if they pay more attention to their personal style. That means, a conscious effort of time and dollars devoted to wardrobe, accessories, grooming, and posture.

As far as sex goes, every woman I know would rather spend time with a well-groomed, well-dressed guy rather than a sloppy schlump. Attention to personal style shows self-respect and respect for whomever you are with. Chicks dig respect. Employers demand it.

What message would you like to send about who you are; Confident, smart, sharp, successful? You have to dress the part. If you look clumsy and awkward that’s what we’ll think you are until you prove otherwise. That could take a long time.

Attention to the details of your personal style can help you feel cool, confident, intelligent and interesting, improve your love life, and help to increase your income.

Here’s seven solid suggestions for starting the process of creating your killer look:

1) Cultivate a Core Wardrobe. This will take some thought and bucks. So save up because you want the best quality you can afford. It will be worth it. Here’s the wardrobe pieces you’ll need to acquire:

great fitting jeans, casual collared shirts, good quality sweaters, hard soled shoes, wool trousers, a tailored sport coat, dress shirts, a tailored suit, heavy and lightweight outer jackets, good T shirts, belts, cool leather sneakers, casual leather moccasins or driving shoes, two ties in colors that flatter your skin and eyes.

2) Focus on fit. Don’t wear dad jeans from Costco except to clean out your garage or mow the lawn. Clothes should skim the body, not cling nor sag. No baggy shirts or slacks. Pant hems = 3/4″ from floor. Shoulder seams should line up with your shoulders. Sleeves should end 3/4″ from wrist.

3) Know what you want before you go shopping. Know what styles you like by looking in magazines like Details, Esquire, Vanity Fair, GQ, The New York Times Mens Style Magazine, Wall St. Journal. Cut pictures out. Know what stores sell the kinds of clothes you want. (More about shopping in # 7.)

4) Take pride in maintaining your clothes and accessories. Hang everything on good hangers. Sweaters get folded neatly on shelves. Whatever is in your closet needs to be clean, wrinkle free and odor free. Even shoes. Brush your clothes to get the lint off.

5) Get a current haircut from a cool hair stylist at a rockin’ salon. This should cost you more than $50.00, unless you live in Iowa. Bring a picture of a famous celebrity with a great hair cut like what you want. Ask for styling tips and buy product. Ask how to use them.

6) Wear colors that flatter your skin tone and eye colors. If you have brown hair, wear brown pants, black hair, black pants, and so on. For jeans, dark wash is best. If you have blue or green eyes, for crying out loud, wear shirts, sweaters, and ties the same color as your eyes. Get lots of them in different shades of the color of your eyes. Women love that. If your eyes are brown, get shirts in the same colors as your undertones of your skin. That will be either golden, earthy colors, or wine colors, either/or. If you’re not sure, get a color consultation from an expert image consultant.

7) If the whole idea of shopping and putting outfits together is the last thing you want to do, contact a certified professional personal image consultant in your area. Looking for an upgrade in the appearance dept? Call a professional, like me. You’re not going to have your kid’s baby sitter do your financial planning, right? Don’t leave your personal and professional appearance in the hands of a sales person who was selling lattes at the corner coffee shop the week before. If you’re in the Denver area, visit my website, then call to book a Men’s Style and Wardrobe Package. I don’t sell any products, so I won’t try to sell you shirts or suits. I just want you to look your absolute best, so you’ll get a color chart, your closet edited and organized, the wardrobe analysed, hairstyle and eyeglass recommendations, and a shopping list created. Then we hit the stores. In just a few short hours you’ll have great outfits put together for work and weekends. Then I come back next season and solve some more wardrobe problems. Sound good? Let’s do this now.

A few days ago a friend of mine asked my opinion about letting her hair go grey. Other women are probably wondering the same thing. I’d like to share with you, my answer.

The reason we think that we might look old with grey hair is that for the most part, the only people who have grey hair are…well, upward of 50. But our human mind associates grey hair with old people. That’s the first problem. It’s in the mind of the observer. We can’t change the brain’s hard wiring.

The second problem is that the color grey doesn’t really flatter our skin tone. That’s why most people with grey hair look kind of washed out and sallow. It just doesn’t DO anything for you. It doesn’t really flatter people unless they are so dog gone good looking that it doesn’t matter what color their hair is. Like some models that you see in ads, or movie stars, right? That’s because they are models and movie stars! Like this woman to the left; she’s a professional model because she is drop-dead gorgeous. Models and actors are hired by ad agencies and film production companies to look beautiful. They have professional stylists and makeup people and hair people fussing them and fixing them for hours before they are in front of a camera!

My recommendation, for most mere mortals, would be to slowly go toward an ash blond color for your hair. Ash is a whitish blond rather than a yellow blond. This color will look appropriate for you and go WITH you and your skin tone in a flattering way. It won’t look fake or artificial. It will flatter you while not looking too fussy.

How does that sound? I welcome your comments.

Never buy anything JUST because it’s on Sale! If you do, it will shrink up, ball up, pill up, or twist up into a handful of floppy fabric that you’ve wasted your money on.

We are hypnotized by the word Sale! As if you’ll get everything you want for just a few measly pennies. Yea, not really. They want you to think that you will be the height of fashion and your wallet will be none the worse for wear. Hogwash. It’s marketing.

Don’t be fooled by marketing and advertising tricks. They tell you that you’ll look fantastic in everything they are selling…and they want you to believe that you’re a fool if you don’t buy it right away.

The first picture in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale catalogue (July, 2012), is a very young lady, a teenaged girl, really, wearing a gray sweater, holding a gray handbag. Well, no one this girl’s age can afford that handbag, ($1,268.90) unless she is the daughter of an Arab sheik. The next picture you see is someone wearing gray tights and gray suede strappy sandals with a 4 1/2″ heal.

The only people who look good in gray are people with gray hair, or people who are so dog-goned young and cute, it doesn’t matter what the heck they wear. And the only women I know who can wear 4 1/2″ heals for more than a nano second, are teenagers – who can’t afford the sandals ($299.99) anyway!

There are definately ways to use the upcoming Nordstrom sale, and other summer sales, to your advantage.

1) Take a hard look inside your closet and see where the gaps are. What are you always thinking you need more of; skirts, dresses, cute blouses? Make a list.

2) Take an honest look at your finances. See how much you can afford to spend on clothes this summer without going into dept. Make a budget.

3) Edit your closet. Get rid of at least ten things in there that you haven’t worn in the last few years and, truth be told, you’re not ever going to wear. Make a donation.

4) Go through the catalogue and take a look at all the different fashion styles; trendy,(p.5), chic, (p.45), (p. 4G), artistic, (p.4), funky, (p. 13), retro, (p.8), grunge, (p.21), jr. (p.28). See what you love. Earmark pages. Go back and circle what you love. Check the price. Make priorities.

5) Check out looks in other magazines to be sure of what styles you love. This is how you get un-stuck from ruts. See how the stylists from the magazines put outfits together this year. There are lots of new ideas out there this year; mixing prints, bold color blocking, bright colors. Make note of new trends.

6) Before you spend a dime, walk through the store on the first or second day of the sale. See what they have to offer in the different departments. Venture into unchartered territory. Try things on and be honest about how they actually look on you. Don’t ask the sales person, they are on commission. They want you to buy everything. Ask yourself these three questions;

1) Does it fit? 2)Does it flatter? 3) Do I love it?

If the answer to any of these is “No”, do not buy it! Even if it is on sale! There are plenty other options. Make yourself a promise to be honest.

7) Hire a certified professional personal image consultant to help you shop. Not the “personal stylists” the store employes – they are commissioned sales people! They know nothing about what colors make your unique skin tone glow and your eyes sparkle. They don’t have any training or experience in design elements like balance, proportion, focus, contrast, scale, texture, and body shape. And they sure as heck don’t know you, your unique personal style, your tastes, your lifestyle, what you’ve already got and what you need, want, and love. You have enough mistakes hanging in your closet already. Call Marian Rothschild, AICI FLC to help you get the look you love for the life you want. Make an upgrade. Call now (720) 933-9247.

Winter Clothes in your Summer Closet? It just doesn’t work…

It’s time to pack up sweaters, corduroy, wool, and fleece. These items will only clog up your closet space and make it difficult for you to find a suitable outfit for a summer outing. Keeping them in the prime real estate of your closet is cumbersome and will only lead to dressing-time frustrations.

Here’s a quick and easy solution:

If it’s not a light jacket or something you wear on a daily basis – put it in a box, trunk or the spare bedroom closet. (Make sure you remember where you put them for when the temp drops.) Folded things can remain folded, hanging pieces can simply be hung in an out of the way closet. Donate things that you haven’t worn in over a year. Someone will be able to get some wear out of your cast-offs. Be realistic, especially with your shoes and sandals. They may need to be replaced.

What’s left in your closet should only be summer wardrobe that you actually wear, that fit you, flatter you, and that you love. Organize items by category, then by color. This makes pieces so easy to find when you need them. Try things on that haven’t been worn in a while things change – you might be surprised.

To update last year’s pieces, add some accessories in fun colors that don’t necessarily match, but that relate to the outfit somehow, or tie everything together. Try a bright scarf or chunky necklace. Both of those pieces are very fashion forward this season. Two prints CAN be worn together if, and only if there is at least one color that’s the same in both prints, and if one print is more bold, one is more subtle.

Not only does a summer closet edit allow you to freshen up the ambiance of your closet, but it affords you wonderful and excting discoveries when winter rolls around. You never knew how much you loved that sweater that your Great Aunt gave you until its been sitting in a box for a few months! Place a few small cedar blocks in each box to keep the moths from making lunch out of your items.

You might just find something you would love to wear in the back corners of your closet. Use inspiration from magazines and catalogues like Anthropologie and J. Crew to put together outfits that express the real you!
