Two points: 1) Your eyes should be directly in the middle of the frame in order to get the most out of your prescription, and from the other person’s point of view, they just look best in that position. 2) The frame of your glasses should be either the same color as your hair, or the same tone (meaning how light or how dark) as your hair. 

This is the new Geek Chic style that is super urban cool right now, for both guys and girls. Cute, right? But they are sitting way too low on the bridge of her nose. If you push them up higher and they just slide down, or just aren’t shaped correctly, you CAN correct that yourself. Just buy yourself a few sets of pre-cut, self-adhesive rubber inserts to apply to the inside, where the glasses hit your nose. The rubber inserts are available at frame shops or where glasses are sold.

Anyone I know who has ever gone to a Holiday party in Chicago, New York,  or Colorado, wears something warm. You gotta be warm, otherwise you’re uncomfortable, and then what’s the point?  

Too many women wear all black, thinking it makes them look slimmer. Black makes you look dark, and dreary, and mournful. If you must wear black slacks or a black skirt, this style consultant recommends wearing a light or bright color on top, preferably a color that flatters your skin tone (coral) or eye color ( blue, green, or teal). Be sure to add cheek and lip color in the same color family as whatever red color you’re wearing. Also, some eye liner and mascara will give your eyes definition, while concealor blends and evens out skin tone.

Here are seven ways to make your Holiday gift shopping go smoothly in a short amount of time. (And get the gift that they’ll love!)

1) Ask what they want ahead of time. Get several ideas. Know the recipient’s interests; hobbies, taste in music, clothes, stores, sizes, weekend activities. 

2) Make a list. Write each recipient’s name along with several gift possibilities for each person. 

3) Ask for other people’s advise on what you should give your loved one, co-worker, or best friend. Sometimes other people, like your husband or daughter, can give you ideas that you hadn’t thought of. Sometimes they know if the person already has something, or what they would love to have but are reluctant to tell you. 

4) Shop on line whenever possible. Sit down at your computer with your credit card and your list. Google the name of the item, brand, and any other specifications needed to find the desired gift on line. Buy on line to save time. Have the item shipped directly to the recipient with a gift card attached.

5) If you must go into the stores, go early, 10:00 a.m. on a weekday. Sales people are fresh and eager first thing in the morning. The stores are clean and uncrowded. There are parking spaces, and the racks haven’t been picked over yet. 

6) Plan your shopping trip. Bring your list that you created. Know what you need and where you are going to go, exactly which stores, in what order. Ask for a Gift Receipt for easy exchanges. 

7) Hire a personal shopper, (like me) to do your shopping for you. Personal Shoppers are familiar with all the different stores, merchandise, and sales people. We are so very different from the personal shoppers who work for a department store. Those people are simply sales clerks who have met a quota! They will want you to spend the most money per item and they can only shop in their store, nowhere else! When I go shopping for a client I ask tons of questions about whomever you are buying for. I’ll ask your budget and where you’d like me to shop. You’ll have options, and your loved one will receive gifts that they’ll absolutely love. It’s a personal touch, if you simply don’t have time. Here’s how: blow dry hair 75% dry. Then grab a section of hair, comb through to smooth, and wrap, starting from the ends. Add a touch of hot air for 1-2 minutes to rolled hair, then leave the curlers in while you apply makeup and get dressed.

Use large rollers for more body, small rollers for more curl. If your hair is thin and limp, apply a volumizer or setting jell before rolling. When you take the rollers out ten minutes later, finger comb to style, then spray to hold the curl.

Evidence shows that most women only wear about 80% of what is in their closet! Is that you? You’re spending money on clothes you don’t wear. How much frustration can you stand? I was in Nordstrom Rack yesterday and I just wanted to cry. So many people all around me, men and women, young and old, were buying things that were not going to flatter them. Both guys and girls buy things for wrong reasons, in the wrong colors, shapes, and styles. We women sometimes think we need something for a particular occasion, or for work or weekends so we just buy something. That something ends up hanging, unworn for years. Sound familiar?

Unless you know some simple guidelines for shopping, you will keep making the same mistakes over and over.  Your money will fly out of your wallet and into the cash register. How much longer are you going to do that?

Here is just a sample of what you will learn when you shop with an independent Image Consultant, like me. Before you buy one more piece of clothing:

•  Know what styles you like. Find pictures in magazines, catalogues, and advertisements, of outfits and looks that you love. Cut the pictures out and put them up on a bulletin board in or near your closet so you see them everyday. Use those photos to inspire you to buy what you love and put together outfits that you love.
• Choose colors that flatter you. Do not even pull clothes off the rack that are in drab colors that do nothing for you.
• Versatility equals value. You should be able to wear each piece of clothing with at least three other pieces of clothing in your wardrobe.
• When you see someone in something that you just love, ask that person where they got it. Certain stores carry certain styles. Are you more of an Anthropologie type, or a Coldwater Creek type? See what styles those stores carry. Shop at stores that carry styles you love.
• Ask for help when trying to find different sizes or styles. Sometimes things are kept in the back room where only employees can go.
• Trust your instinct weather something looks good or not. Do not rely on salespeople. Most of them are on commission. They just want you to buy. They don’t care what you look like. I do.
• Don’t buy sale items just because they are on sale. How much money have you wasted like that?
• And finally, “Personal Shoppers” employed by the stores like Nordstrom are there to sell, sell, sell. They are simply sales people who have met a certain quota. They get commission on whatever you buy. Independent Stylists or Wardrobe Consultants like myself work for their clients with no commission from the store. I want you to only buy things that flatter you and that you love. Together we can shop at whatever store has what you need and love. Nordstom’s “personal shoppers” can’t do that.

• The ingredients in your sunblock is more important than the SPF#. If it doesn’t contain Zink, you’re not protected from all the different rays. I like: Obagi, available from an M.D.
• Dermatologists recommended #1 way to reduce wrinkles, even skin tone, and lighten age spots is a Retinoid cream at night.Get an Rx from an M.D. Over the counter creams are not strong enough.
• Pockets that pooch out on the side of your pants will add width to your hips. Use Hollywood Fashion Tape to hold them in, or stitch pockets closed.
• Two hair stylists who I’ve recently used and recommend: Jean-Charles Duchene at Artistry Salon 1750 30th st Boulder, 303-249-6795, and Stephen Schaller at Salon Salon, just north of McGuckins Hardware. Update your do!
• As we age our metabolism slows down (darn it!). To stay trim & firm, increase your workouts to 5 x per week; 3 hours of aerobic, 2 hours strength per week.
• For visual thinness, always enhance a vertical line on your body. Hang long necklaces, wear a lighter or brighter colored shirt under a dark jacket or cotton sweater, wear a long silk scarf in a flattering color. Men, wear a tie, even with loose knot and top button unbuttoned for casual.
• For instant long-looking legs, iron a seam down the center of your slacks, jeans, even capris.
• Sit outside with your legs in the sun while you are reading those necessary documents. Get some sun on your legs, then wear knee-length summer skirts and dresses to show them off. Guys, shorts should be neat, not grungy.
• Move your winter clothing items to another closet. Get rid of what you haven’t worn in the past year. Organize your summer things according to category & color. It IS possible to love your closet.
• For photos, stand up straight with good posture, tummy in, shoulders & hips slanted on a slight diagonal. Ladies, powder to eliminate shine.

• Consider each day and evening’s activities on your trip. Plan outfits accordingly.
• Count the # of days you’ll be gone. That’s how many tops you need to pack, total.
• Pack light. You can always hand-wash items in a sink & hang to dry.
• Wear your heaviest & bulkiest clothes & shoes on the plane.
• Lay out outfits the day before you travel. You only need 3 pr. shoes.
• Always check the weather report for your destination the day before you leave, then again on departure day. You may need to throw in a sweater or umbrella.
• Pack comfortable walking shoes. You still only need 3 pr. shoes.
• Call the hotel to see if they have robes & hair dryers. If they’re not in the room, call for one.
• Don’t stress. You’ll get there when you get there. Being angry about a delayed flight won’t get the plane there any faster.
• Bring a small hostess gift. Then you’ll have room in your suitcase for a souveniere.
